CASE STUDY: Phillips Plumbing Coordinates Kitchen Renovation While Tenant Is On Vacation

BEFORE

AFTER

Partial kitchen remodel completed in just one week

Phillips plumbing coordinated all contractors and kept disruption to a minimum

When a longtime client and rental property owner in Berkeley, California, asked Phillips Plumbing to help renovate a kitchen while her tenants were out of town for one week, we knew the timeline would be challenging.

The project involved more than replacing a sink. The kitchen needed a new countertop, backsplash, sink, and faucet, along with electrical work and painting. With several contractors involved, careful coordination would be essential to completing the renovation on schedule.

We were happy to take on the challenge.

Original Tile Countertop & Backsplash in Berkeley

Updtating an outdated kitchen

The original kitchen featured a vintage-style tile countertop and backsplash that had seen better days. The sink area showed significant wear, and the overall space was ready for an update.

Like many older kitchens in Berkeley, the room had its own character and construction challenges. The goal was to improve the kitchen’s appearance and functionality while working within the existing layout and coordinating the various trades involved.

  • Removal of the old tile countertop and backsplash

  • Installation of a new countertop and backsplash

  • Replacement of the kitchen sink and faucet

  • Rerouting wiring for new electrical outlets and switches

  • Coordination with the property owner’s contractors

  • Final painting and finishing work

The Renovation Included:

Coordinate the entire project

Although Phillips Plumbing’s role centered on the plumbing and related construction work, we also helped coordinate the renovation from beginning to end.

The property owner provided several of the contractors, and we worked with them to keep the project moving. This included coordinating the countertop and backsplash installation, electrical work, and painting so that each phase could be completed in the proper sequence.

For a rental property owner, having someone help manage the moving parts of a renovation can make a significant difference. Instead of having to coordinate every contractor independently, she had a trusted plumbing company helping oversee the process.

A one week renovation window

The most important part of this project was the timeline.

The entire renovation took place while the tenant was out of town for just one week. That meant the work had to be planned carefully, contractors had to stay on schedule, and the different phases of the project had to move forward without unnecessary delays.

By coordinating the work and keeping the project focused, we were able to help the owner complete the kitchen renovation within that window.

A fresh finished kitchen

The completed kitchen is a significant improvement over the original space. The new countertop and backsplash give the room a cleaner, more modern appearance, while the new sink and faucet provide an updated, functional workspace.

The electrical work and painting also helped bring the renovation together, creating a more finished look throughout the kitchen.

Most importantly, the project was completed while the tenant was away, making the renovation a major convenience for both the property owner and the tenant.

We understand that rental property renovations often come with tight schedules and multiple contractors. Whether you are updating an older Berkeley kitchen, replacing a worn-out sink and countertop, or coordinating a larger renovation, having an experienced plumbing company involved can help keep the project moving.

We’re proud to help rental property owners improve their properties—and we’re always up for a challenge.
